More Than a Tractor: A Loss Felt Across Our Community

To many people, a tractor may look like just another piece of farm equipment. But for the Rocky View Chestermere Agricultural Society — and many organizations throughout our community — the recent theft of our tractor represents something much bigger.
This wasn’t simply machinery sitting in a yard. It was a community workhorse, quietly helping make events happen, maintaining shared spaces, supporting volunteers, and lending a hand wherever extra horsepower was needed.
A Shared Community Resource
This was our only tractor, and in 2023 it was upgraded with the support of a grant from the Government of Alberta. That investment allowed us to better serve the community and improve the efficiency, safety, and reach of the many activities that depend on shared equipment like this.
From moving pallets of pumpkins for the Lions Club Pumpkin Patch fundraiser to helping the Chestermere Regional Community Association (CRCA) move barricades at the recreation centre, fill potholes, and transport dirt and materials, this tractor supported far more than one organization.
At the Agricultural Society, it played an essential role in daily operations and community events — moving livestock panels, grooming the arena, pulling hay rides, setting up events, and helping volunteers complete the countless jobs required to keep our grounds safe, functional, and welcoming.
The Impact Beyond Our Fence Line
What makes this loss especially difficult is that the impact stretches far beyond our own organization. This tractor supported multiple community groups, volunteers, and events that residents across our region have come to rely on and enjoy.
It represented collaboration — organizations sharing resources, volunteers working together, and communities finding practical ways to support one another.
A Significant Challenge Ahead
Unfortunately, due to rising equipment costs and depreciation since our last purchase, replacing this tractor today will cost significantly more — tens of thousands of dollars beyond what was previously invested.
This creates a serious challenge not only for the Agricultural Society, but also for the many community programs and events that depend on shared resources like this to operate effectively.

Moving Forward Together
As a result, we are beginning to plan a community fundraising effort to help bridge this gap and restore this essential piece of equipment. Our goal is to ensure that operations, events, and partnerships across the region can continue without interruption.
We are hopeful — and confident — that with community support, we can rebuild what was lost.
If you would like to help, donations can be made through our website:
Every contribution, no matter the size, will directly support our efforts to replace this essential community asset.
A Community That Continues to Stand Together
This tractor may be gone, but the spirit of community it supported is not. The volunteers, organizations, and residents who rely on these shared spaces and events remain at the heart of everything we do.
With continued support and collaboration, we will move forward — together.
